The Steam Train Half Marathon, hosted by Community Health Resources (CHR), is the only half marathon in the U.S. that races against a steam train and attracts runners from all over the country. This event is a fun-filled family event that everyone can have the opportunity to participate in. The race officially starts on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 10 a.m. and will finish by about 1 p.m. We are looking for volunteers to come approximately 2 hours ahead of the race kick-off time at 8 a.m., as well as those who can stay after to help clean up until about 1 p.m. We are looking for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks before, during, and after the race, including:

  • Bystanders (Help set up and monitor tables at the Essex Steam Train)
  • Water Stop (Monitor water stations along the course)
  • Course Marshall (Direct runners along the course)
  • Transition Aids (Support transition at relay exchange at the Deep River Landing)
  • Finish Line (Hand out Finisher Medals and water to runners)
  • Clean up

Proceeds from the event will benefit CHR, an essential behavioral healthcare provider that has been here for the community throughout the pandemic, as well as three local nonprofits: The Nest Coffee House / A Little Compassion Inc., the Essex Library, and the Deep River Fire Department.
