The vision of West Tuality Habitat for Humanity is a community where everyone has a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. We believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities and is a foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty. Our work is focused on Western Washington County, Oregon (Forest Grove, Cornelius, Gaston, North Plains, Gales Creek, Banks, Timber, Buxton and the surrounding areas).
In addition to building homes, West Tuality Habitat also provides critical home repairs for vulnerable home owners - seniors, people with disabilities, people recovering from serious illnesses, people who cannot afford the critical home repairs they need, etc. The core repair crew undertakes minor repairs and improvements for vulnerable homeowners, such as installing a wheel chair ramp, painting the exterior or interior, removing rotting steps, etc. These repairs help improve the homeowners quality of life, improve the safety of their homes, and often extend their time in their homes, allowing them to age in place.
We are in need of experienced volunteers - people who know carpentry and construction, who now how to use hand tools and power tools - to volunteer regularly as a part of our home construction volunteer team. You do not have to live in our service area to participate. Involving volunteers in these roles helps us involve more community members in our work and helps us direct more funds to purchasing materials and supporting new homeowners.
These core home construction volunteers will come to work sites at least twice a month. Work sites are throughout Western Washington County (Forest Grove, Cornelius, Gaston, North Plains, Gales Creek, Banks, Timber, Buxton and the surrounding areas). We have a current core group that comes twice a week, every week (and you are welcomed to come this often as well). But we need more core group participants!
In addition to working with 2 to 4 other core volunteers, you will sometimes work with groups of volunteers - people who will come one time and will not necessarily have any carpentry or construction experience. Our construction manager will create activities for these inexperienced but very enthusiastic volunteers to undertake, and you will help support these volunteers in performing tasks that day. Your goal will be to help them feel successful and a part of the work of Habitat for Humanity.
Tools, materials, hard hats, safety vests, and protective glasses are provided and are to be worn by volunteers at all times. Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes or boots and to wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on or getting dirty. Layering clothing is recommended as temperatures can change throughout the day. Volunteers are asked to wear rain pants and a jacket if you may be working in the rain - and remember, we work rain or shine. Core volunteers also are asked to wear a special safety vest that identifies them as volunteers on the site.
Personal power tools are not allowed. There is no smoking, drugs, or alcohol allowed on our worksites. All core volunteers must undergo a professional and criminal background check. A conviction is NOT automatically a prohibition on volunteering with us; we take into consideration the nature of the incident and your references.
Volunteer go through a safety training and through safeguarding training, and must follow our Code of Conduct, which is available on our web site. During service, volunteers are representatives of Habitat for Humanity and our mission. In addition to complying with all laws, regulations and Habitat for Humanity policies.
Worksites are all over Western Washington County, including in rural areas. If you do not have transportation to worksites, we MAY be able to do ride sharing with other volunteers, meeting at the West Tuality Habitat for Humanity / ReStore office in Forest Grove.
We also strongly encourage you to follow West Tuality Habitat for Humanity on Facebook and Instagram and YouTube and to view our web site to learn more about us.
