Mission Statement

Dr. Dolittle’s House Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is a non-profit organization based in Ashtabula County Ohio dedicated to rescuing injured and orphaned wildlife with the intension of release back home into the wild. It is our mission to rehabilitate and protect local Ohio wildlife by educating the public about nature and its delicately balanced ecosystem. This is especially important in our ever growing suburban and urban communities. We want to bond people to the animals and to nature and inspire them to want to protect and preserve it.

Description

My Name is Alyssa Shumac, founder of Dr. Dolittle’s House Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Throughout my life I was always finding injured or orphaned wildlife and wanted to help them. As I grew older, I continued to find more and more animals in need, and it became apparent that there were simply not enough facilities that accept wildlife for rehabilitation. The problem I ran into most often was that there just wasn’t enough government funding for these rehabilitation facilities to thrive, thus they are few and far between. I participated in dozens of training seminars and learned all that I could learn. In 2021 I obtained my own wildlife rehabilitation license. I quickly realized why there are so few wildlife rehabilitation centers, its stressful, demanding and very expensive to run! In 2022 I applied for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and Dr. Dolittle’s House was born. We are currently working towards conducting educational programs for the public and getting them involved in the wonderful wild world we all live in! I love rehabilitating wildlife, its full of twists and turns and is never short on surprises. It shows you the brutality of nature but also the beauty and humor it possesses. There is no greater feeling then bringing in a weak animal barely clinging to life and watching its transformation. Guiding it through hurdles and obstacles, watching that weak animal bloom into something beautiful, majestic and free.
