About Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Philadelphia

Location:

901 E LUZERNE ST, PHILADELPHIA, PA 19124, US

Mission Statement

"Inspired by Gospel Values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. As a reflection of the whole family of God, members, who are known as Vincentians, are drawn from every ethnic and cultural background, age group, and economic level. Vincentians are united in an international society of charity by prayer and reflection, mutually supporting gatherings and adherence to a basic Rule. Organized locally in conferences, Vincentians witness God's love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The Society collaborates with other people of goodwill in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served, because in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ."

Description

Parish Conferences

Operating within, but independent of, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, our 59 parish-based conferences, and 850+ membership, help those in need with material, moral and spiritual support, through home visits. These conferences are the very heart and purpose of our organization.

Warehouse & Thrift Stores

The Society's thrift stores play an important role in providing assistance to those in need. Through a staff of employees and volunteers located at 3 area thrift stores, we work to collect, evaluate and merchandise a variety of needed goods. Those who cannot afford clothing, furniture and other household items are provided for through a Vincentian-initiated referral service. We also work with other social service agencies to provide their clients with needed items at reduced prices. Proceeds from the sale of these goods help to fund the Society's many good works.

Through the Society's warehouse and thrift stores, we provide a number of important functions to both the local community and the nation. By collection of used clothing, furniture, household items and appliances, the Society serves as a major recycling resource. Millions of pounds of clothing, thousands of pieces of furniture and ton after ton of household goods are given a second life and kept out of landfills. By the prudent use of these items, the quality of life for many in need is improved throughout the local community. If this help was not available, these needs would most likely be met through public tax dollars.

Guiding Star Ministries

Guiding Star Ministries is a transitional housing program assisting women and their children. We offer housing, counseling and other support services enhanced by spiritual guidance. Up to 6 families, at once, are invited to live in our home while they learn valuable parenting skills and pursue employment or continue their education. Our staff helps them build a promising future for themselves and their children. Guiding Star serves women aged 18 or older regardless of race, color, creed or nationality.
