Located along the beautiful Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park stretches across three states: Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. With over 85 miles of hiking trails, historical sites, overlooks, camping, and guided tours, Cumberland Gap provides opportunities for visitors of all ages and abilities.
In addition to its natural beauty, the park is also a place of great historical significance. Known as the "first great gateway to the west," the Cumberland Gap served as a mountain pass for migratory animals and humans for thousands of years. It was occupied as a strategic stronghold by both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. In order to better tell the story of the Cumberland Gap through the centuries, the park offers Living History programs to educate the public and enrich the visitor experience.
