Do you have an interest in renewing, repairing, and restoring? Do you like working with your hands and have an eye for detail? Then consider this opportunity to mend materials at the State Library an excellent fit for you!
Enjoy a true sense of accomplishment in this position by helping to repair various books, pamphlets, maps, and other library materials. The Book Mender position has a key role to play in the maintenance and preservation of the physical, paper-based collections at the State Library of Oregon. Focus, patience, and a respect for best practice is the name of the game. Keeping our materials in tip-top shape helps maintain our commitment to ensuring access to Oregon government publications and being stewards of resources to support democracy and the public good.

Training: Orientation, training, and supplies are provided on-site by State Library staff and preservation professionals.
Work Environment: All book mending work is done in our private Special Collections workroom at a large desk with ergonomic chairs. The area is well-lit and climate controlled.
Work Schedule: Mornings between 8:30 and 12noon, once a week (preferably Mondays, but we can be flexible). A typically shift lasts 2-3 hours, though you can choose to do more.

Mission Statement
Citizens who volunteer are valuable partners of the State Library of Oregon. The State Library Board and the State Librarian support and encourage the volunteer program. Volunteers promote community awareness of the many services of the State Library and assist staff in the achievement of the mission and goals of the State Library. State Library staff are encouraged to assist in the creation of meaningful, productive, and varied roles volunteers can fill throughout the library. The Volunteer Coordinator provides oversight of the agency’s volunteer program.
Description
The State Library of Oregon cultivates, preserves, and delivers library and information services to foster lifelong leaning and community engagement.
There are three main divisions of the State Library:
Government Information and Library Services provides research and reference assistance to state government and to persons on official state business. Their in-depth collection of more than one million items specializes in business, history, political and social sciences. The collection also includes federal and state government publications and a comprehensive collection of materials about Oregon.
Library Support and Development Services plans for statewide library development; consults with local librarians, citizens and government officials; reports library statistics; and administers state and federal library grant programs.
The Talking Book and Braille Library is the regional library for the Library of Congress' National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled. Oregonians who are unable to read standard print because of a visual, physical, or reading disability are eligible to receive free audio and Braille materials either through the mail or via download.
