Greeneville - Non-medical Hospice Volunteer - Direct Patient
ORGANIZATION: Amedisys Hospice (Tri-Cities Serving 13 Counties in East TN)
Please visit the new page to apply.
Our (Non-medical) Hospice Direct Care Volunteer provides support to patients living with a terminal illness, in addition to their caregivers and family. Support is provided in a variety of ways, including companionship, socialization, and caregiver relief. There is no medical background needed - our Hospice volunteers do not interact with the patient in any medical or personal hygiene capacity (i.e., volunteers do not give baths, get the patient in/out of bed, or to/from the bathroom, feed patients or give medication).
Some examples of what a Direct Care Volunteer could do:
- Provide companionship
- Socialization and/or support to hospice patients and their families/caregivers
- Reading to the patient
- Playing games
- Writing letters to or on behalf of the patient
- Assisting with light household duties (watering plants, walking pets, washing dishes, emptying and taking out the garbage, etc.
Volunteers make their own schedule! We do ask for about 2 hours per visit.

Mission Statement
Hospice is a gift - it gives people who are facing a life-limiting illness the freedom to live all the days of their lives by offering comfort, dignity, quality of life and time. Amedisys Hospice is centered on caring for the whole person - with expert medical care, symptom management as well as emotional and spiritual support for you - along with resources, information and emotional support for your family and caregivers. Every day of life matters. At Amedisys, we view hospice services as a means for allowing people to make the very most of their time, even when faced with life-limiting circumstances.
Description
Amedisys Hospice is about people helping people, and our team of hospice experts goes to great lengths to help our patients and their loved ones live each day to its fullest. Our approach is so much more than our experienced medical guidance. We foster genuine personal connections that offer emotional, psychological and spiritual support - taking an active role in the interests that bring joy. We work to help patients achieve their personal goals and to bring joy, comfort, and fulfillment into every moment possible. This strong system of support also extends to our patients’ families, providing them resources and support throughout this journey. The families we work with rate our care as "excellent". We care for all eligible patients. Hospice provides non-curative treatment and comfort to people with a life expectancy of six months or less, according to a physician’s judgment. We provide aggressive pain and symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, and quality of life, supporting both the patient and the entire family.
