Join an Engineering World Health Institute in 2024!
Travel with purpose and volunteer in a hospital in Guatemala or Uganda next summer with Engineering World Health.
EWH Institutes are two-month service abroad opportunities for university students and young professionals in STEM. During this program, you’ll receive intensive technical training before being placed in a hospital in a low-resource areas of Guatemala or Uganda. As a volunteer biomedical equipment technician, you’ll collaborate with local hospital staff to repair medical equipment and improve the facilities’ overall healthcare technology situation and their ability to care for patients. An overview of program tasks & activities is below:
Month One: Language & Technical Training
- Study the operation, function, and design of essential medical equipment
- Study the local language
- Learn technical and engineering skills needed to make repairs when resources are limited
- Get to know your host country!
Month Two: Hands-On Service at Your Host Hospital
- Repair equipment and complete preventive maintenance
- Develop user guides
- Complete a secondary project
- Collaborate with hospital staff and technicians
- Join your local community!
Program Locations & Dates
Guatemala & Uganda: June 2, 2024 - August 4, 2024
Application Deadlines
Priority Deadline: December 1 (hear back by late January)
Final Deadline: February 1 (hear back by early March)
Applications are accepted from students 18+ who will have completed two semesters of physics and two semesters of calculus OR have relevant technical experience/coursework (circuits course/lab, hands-on work or project experience, etc.). AP credit is acceptable for these requirements.
Tuition & Financial Aid
Application Fee: $25 USD
Tuition: $8,500 USD
Submit your application by October 31, 2023 and your tuition will automatically be reduced to $7,500 USD!
In addition, Financial Aid is available! In 2023, 98% of participants received EWH Financial Aid with the average award being $2,000 USD. To apply, please select "Yes" on the "Are you applying for EWH Financial Aid?" question in your application for admission, and an additional form will be added to your EWH Dashboard. Low-interest loans are also available for up to $2,500 thanks to the generosity of EWH donors. We encourage participants to fundraise through external resources as well and are happy to provide assistance during this process. For the greatest chance of receiving EWH funding, apply by the priority deadline of December 1.
