The Highmark Caring Place is a center to help children, families, and young adults find hope in grief. We provide peer support groups to children and their families who are grieving the death of a loved one. All of our support groups are provided at no cost to the families, and insurance is not required.
Volunteers in the group sessions
When families meet in their groups, facilitators, family greeters and food servers all work together to welcome the families to the Caring Place. The evenings begin with dinner together in the large community room. This serves as a time of transition from outside to inside the Caring Place. The volunteers eat and talk and laugh or just listen, sitting with the children and adults as they unwind from the stresses of the day and begin to focus on the evening together.
After eating, talking, and maybe playing some games, the large groups break into smaller age-specific groups.
Group facilitators
Two or more facilitators work together in groups of preschoolers, young children, middle-school-age children, teens or adults. As a team and with the Caring Place staff, the volunteers decide on the activities for the evening, work with the children or adults in implementing these activities and facilitate the group process.

Mission Statement
Highmark Caring Place, a Center for Grieving Children, Adolescents, and Their Families, provides peer support groups and referral services, at no cost, to those who have experienced the death of a loved one.
Description
Children have been called "forgotten mourners." In Pennsylvania, thousands of children experience the death of a father or mother, sister or brother, grandparent or other family member, every year. These children feel alone. The Highmark Caring Place is a safe place where grieving children and their families talk about their feelings and memories with each other in the presence of caring volunteers. The Caring Place helps grieving children know they are not alone. The Highmark Caring Place is a volunteer based program. Our volunteers are the HEART of our program. Caring Place volunteers come from all walks of life. No special education or experience is needed to become a Caring Place volunteer - just an ability to truly listen and support others. Children and adults meet in age-specific groups, sharing thoughts and feelings, offering peer support. Volunteers facilitate groups of children or adults, listening, encouraging, helping them to express memories and feelings.
