My Market volunteers are critical to supporting the operations of the Food For Others My Market choice pantry. My Market volunteers serve our clients efficiently with quality customer service. Volunteers for the My Market client choice pantry may register to serve as parking leaders, market assistants, or warehouse volunteers.
Responsibilities
- Greet clients in a friendly, professional manner
- Assist clients with their selection of food items
- Assist with the stocking and restocking of food on their respective shelves
- Be mindful of personal safety and health guidelines while verifying quality of food
- Be mindful of everyone’s safety within the market - specifically by not using personal technology (this includes headphones)
- Assist staff with other office organization tasks as needed
- Serve diverse and vulnerable populations with integrity
- Assist staff with the sorting, loading, and unloading pallets of food from grocery partners
- Manage the flow of parking, traffic, and people throughout FFO’s premises
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must be able to lift at least 20lbs
- Must be able to stand for the duration of a shift
- Shifts are Monday to Friday from 9:15am-1:15pm or 1:00-5:15pm
- Bilingual language skills (Spanish, Arabic, Farsi) are helpful, but not required
- Must wear closed-toed shoes - No Exceptions
- Strong customer service and communication skills required
- Dedicated to treating everyone involved with respect and dignity
- Experience working with diverse and/or vulnerable populations preferred

Our mission is to distribute food to our neighbors in need by mobilizing our giving community and volunteers.
Description
In our nation’s capital area, the high cost of living forces many families who are struggling to make ends meet to choose between spending money for food, or on other basic needs such as housing and healthcare. Since 1995, Food for Others has been helping many of these families.
Food for Others is an important part of Northern Virginia’s safety net for those needing food when an emergency strikes and for the growing number of working poor who need to supplement their inadequate food supplies.
Food for Others obtains much of its food through food rescue operations and food drives. Staff and volunteers pick up good food that would have been discarded by local grocery stores and other retail food establishments. The food is brought to the warehouse for temporary storage, including refrigeration as appropriate. Food drives provide the majority of our non-perishable food.
Local merchants, the USDA, food drives, and crop harvests provide the food; volunteers and staff provide the hands; and charitable contributions and fundraising events provide the funds.
