Community cleanups bring volunteers together to clean, repair, and improve public spaces or other areas. These areas may have been neglected, vandalized, or misused.

Here are some tips for planning a community cleanup:
  • Choose a project that's right for your community.
  • Make a detailed event plan.
  • Choose an enthusiastic leader.
  • Recruit volunteers early.
  • Get supplies.
  • Set a date, time, and location for the cleanup.
  • Promote the event online.
  • Distribute and post notices of the cleanup in the weeks beforehand.
  • Inform local media outlets.
Some examples of clean up projects include:
  • Picking up junk along streets or waterways
  • Cleaning up a vacant lot
  • Renovating a local playground
  • Raking up leaves in alleyways
  • Planting flowers in common areas

Community cleanups can benefit everyone. An unclean neighborhood can be a health hazard because litter attracts insects that can spread diseases. Clean-up campaigns can also raise awareness about the litter problem and get people thinking about changing their behavior. Weekend volunteers needed.
