What if you could go to your place of work with a renewed sense of purpose and direction, confident in the knowledge that the work you do contributes to a great cause? When you work with us in the role of Operations, this could be your life. Grow to understand our existing and potential food donors, CHiPS inventory management and supply chain operations and hold a vital role in organization to ensure smooth operations. You will be given autonomy to design the operations strategy: to assign, meet and exceed operational metrics, and in turn, grow and improve your communication and leadership skills and organizational capabilities in this pivotal role.
The position entails four main tasks: Research and identify operational inefficiencies and establish relationships with food donors and coordinate with the management and internal tech team to implement the strategy
About CHiPS: Based in the Park Slope/Gowanus community of Brooklyn, the mission of CHiPS is two fold: to eliminate food insecurity and homelessness in New York City.
Since 1971, CHiPS (Community Help in Park Slope, Inc.) has been a community of Brooklyn neighbors, volunteers, and friends who share a common vision to help encourage and support those often forgotten. Our soup kitchen and food pantry serves 400+ meals daily. In our Frances Residence we provide shelter for single mothers and their infants as well as pre-and post-natal care. Our model drives awareness and access to nutritious foods while cultivating resilience and equity through our free-of-charge food distribution program and housing.
We welcome over 1,400 volunteers each year to CHiPS, helping support our Soup Kitchen, Pantry, in our Residence and with special projects.
Intern Role and Responsibilities:
We welcome applicants with experience in the non-profit sector, as well as student volunteers who wish to hone their operations and business management skills. Most importantly, we are interested in volunteers with energy, entrepreneurial spirit, and a desire to optimize operations for CHiPS’ community programs. Students would be eligible to earn college credit
Specific Responsibilities include:
- Plan quickest, safest routes to donor location to assure the food arrives to CHiPS Kitchen on time.
- Work with scheduler(s) to confirm scheduled servings. May contact franchisees and serving sites before each serving to make sure plans are accurate.
- Maintain working order of all CHiPS’ equipment. Perform minor repairs as required.
- Keep accurate trip records to be submitted to management.
- Obtain receipts for all expenses and submit weekly expense reports.
- Monitor permit records on units. Obtain necessary permits as needed.
- Communicate regularly with corporate and fellow CHiPS teammates to ensure alignment.
- Record the names of all CHiPS’ volunteers at each serving.
- Communicate with CHiPS scheduler(s) or coordinator(s) to help prepare press releases and written communications about the schedule for the soup kitchen.
- Coordinate with repair and maintenance vendors on CHiPS soups & kitchen repairs.
- Answer questions from external partners and others on CHiPS operations.

Mission Statement
OUR PHILOSOPHY SINCE 1971, CHiPS (Community Help in Park Slope, Inc.) has been a community of Brooklyn neighbors, volunteers, and friends who share a common vision to help those who are less fortunate. We prepare hot, nutritious meals and serve them in a caring and dignified environment. All our services are offered free of charge through the generosity of our community.
Description
OUR PROGRAMS: Hot Meals, Pantry Bags, Transitional Residence
Last year,
- our soup kitchen served 170,000 nutritious breakfasts, hot lunches, and bagged lunches-to-go to our neighbors who could not afford a meal.
- our food pantry distributed over 10,000 bags of pantry staples for our neighbors to cook nutritious meals at home.
- our Frances Residency Program, founded by the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor and named after their founder Mother Frances Schriver, sheltered 9 young mothers and their babies, and provided counseling and services.
PARTNER WITH US
We invite you to partner with CHiPS in service, and be part of our wonderful team of schools, churches, synagogues, and individuals whose generous donations have helped CHiPS stay strong for over 50 years. For example, the Park Slope Food Coop has supported us with food donations and volunteers. Our solution is simple: keep it local, and see immediate results.
Your support can make a huge difference. We're talking about basic needs, where a little can go a very long way.
