What is CST SLAM? SLAM is a high school program that celebrates the power of play, community, language, and imagination. It is an ensemble program that provides an opportunity for high school students from schools across Chicago and the wider metropolitan area to come together to build community and play with language. We facilitate three Saturday Workshops where SLAM teams learn performance techniques and tools for working with Shakespeare’s text. Back at school, they choose their scenes and rehearse. We come back together in November for three Regional Bouts in which teams gather to showcase the scenes they have been working on!

Why Volunteer? We rely on volunteers to make all of this happen! SLAM is a community program, and as such, we depend on volunteers from the community who are excited to make this program happen for these students.

What will you be doing? Generally, volunteers are assigned to help set up the host schools that the workshop and regional bouts take place at (such as setting up tables and hanging signage), orchestrate the flow of the event during the day (such as working the check in table or assisting teaching artists and teams to be in the right place at the right time), and breaking down the event (taking down tables and signs, serving pizza, helping pack up for the day). These days are from about 7:30am-2pm, and though they are long it is a hugely rewarding opportunity to see these students shine!
