Volunteer Librarians welcome museum guests into the Erwin Welsch Research Library. They oversee inventorying donations, cataloging records, and helping digitize the museum’s archive. Librarians have the opportunity to learn and share information about the railroads, their history, and the trains that ran on them. Volunteers do not need to have experience with trains, model railroading, or libraries. Note: This position does not run model trains.
Responsibilities
· Greeting guests in the library
· Helping guests locate specific resources
· Keeping inventory of incoming donations
· Sorting, filing, and shelfing materials according to the library’s classification system
· Cataloging records
· Participating in archival digitization
· Selling overstock books
· Assisting in keeping the library in a clean and orderly condition
Skills:
· Must be organized
· Must be dependable and punctual
· Should have basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) and experience with office equipment
· Experience with Past Perfect and/or Photoshop Elements is a plus
· Ability to work well and communicate with members of the public and fellow library staff
· Ability to work independently and be self-motivated

- · We request that volunteers complete no less than two shifts per month · All shifts are from 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday.
- · Ability to climb stairs Ability to bend, squat, and lift 15 to 20 pounds No prior experience with library or train knowledge necessary Volunteers must train with head librarians for at least five days before they are able to work on their own
