Thank you so much for applying to volunteer with Border Tails Rescue! We have a staff that works full time to take care of the dogs, but we rely on volunteers like you to help us spend extra time with the dogs. We have many jobs you can do here at BTR including:

Dog walking: our new location is available for dog walking all day, but we will ask you to help with other things like dishes & laundry first! After 5 volunteer sessions, you will be able to handle dogs.

General caregiving (feeding, watering, socializing)

Cleaning (dishes, laundry, cleaning kennels)

Organizing (sorting donations, making things more organized)

Social Media (taking photos, writing bios for dogs)

We ask that whatever position you take on, you be a team player! If you are absolutely against a job, please let us know ahead of time.

When you arrive for your first session, you will be directed to the shift leader for the day that you are there. Please go to them with any questions, comments, concerns. You will also be asked to sign a liability waiver/emergency contact form!

We ask kindly that you:

  1. NEVER put your fingers in the kennels
  2. Wash your hands ANY TIME you touch a dog- you can never wash enough!
  3. Do not sit/stand to play or socialize a dog IN THEIR KENNEL- some dogs are protective over their kennels (even the nicest dogs). All play time should be in a common area or outside!
  4. You MUST fill out a log and have a manager sign it at the end of your shift if you will need any letter signed in the future. Without this log and without a manager's signature, we will be unable to sign any letter verifying your hours.
  5. In order to walk dogs or be hands on with them, you must come 5 times. This is because we need to be sure that anyone interacting with our dogs is committed and has been trained properly.

Here are some of our walking protocols to review ahead of time:

Dogs MUST have a collar (preferably a Martingale) with a leash AND a slip lead, meaning they are double leashed at all times. You must check the collar BEFORE leaving. Ensure collars are properly fitted to a dog.

If temperatures are below 20 degrees, walks need to be kept to 5 minutes or less. If you know a dog is not potty trained, don’t spend 20 minutes trying to get them to go. It’s cold and not fair to the dogs. Keep it short. We never guarantee potty training to adopters, so please just keep the dogs safe & warm.

Avoid ingestion of salt/other items on walks. If a dog eats something they shouldn’t or licks salt, let a manager know immediately when you come in for a walk.

Do not allow the public to pet a dog while you are walking it. If they have questions, direct them to an adoption counselor.

YOU MUST PICK UP ALL POOP- IF IT’S DIARRHEA, PLEASE STILL TRY. Snow or no snow- poop must be picked up. Thank you!!
