Become a tutor - Two hours a week is all it takes.

All you need is a caring heart and a desire to enable a child to overcome their challenges in completing their homework assignments.

Tutors receive all the training, materials, and weekly coaching required to help a second or third-grade girl or boy with the homework they struggle to complete.

No prior experience is necessary, and we make it easy.

Here are some ways you can mentor a child one-on-one :

  • One-on-one tutoring with a child after school.
  • Support children with reading and math homework assignments.
  • Provide children with spelling, grammar, and composition support.
  • Teach a child how to build effective study skills.

Children Rising programs are structured so that it is easy for you to step in and be effective immediately. And you will work in a team environment supported by Children Rising staff and fellow tutors. The reward of watching a student complete the assignments they struggled with is priceless!

A few details:

  • We provide tutor training throughout the entire year. The Children Rising volunteer coordinator will help you register for an upcoming date.
  • The schools we support are in Oakland Unified School District throughout the City of Oakland.
  • We work around your schedule. Clinics are in-person, after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Where?
    • Sankofa Elementary. 581 61st St, Oakland, CA 94609
    • Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary. 960 10th St. Oakland, CA 94607

Here’s what one tutor says:

"We try to help them understand by reteaching what they were unable to learn before so they can do the assignment at hand. One child who had been there an hour working with her tutor said, 'I can’t leave yet; I want to stay and finish my homework.’ That was special." - Audrey Amos, Homework Tutor

Because every young child deserves a fair chance to succeed in school...and in life.

About Children Rising

Location:

Mission Statement

Our mission is to nurture and equip children to rise above the challenges created by generations of poverty, violence and educational inequity.

Description

Children Rising is an Oakland education non-profit founded in 2001. Our Community Engagement Model is poised to make a generational impact in our city. We are educating and energizing the broader community; recruiting, training, and supporting an array of highly skilled and experienced tutors and mentors; developing key strategic partnerships with schools and community partners; and empowering thousands of vulnerable children and youth to rise above the challenges they face. Our vision is for every struggling child to be reached by a caring member of the community at a critical time in their life to nurture hope, the courage to dream, and the opportunity to thrive. We empower children and youth attending public schools most affected by poverty, violence, and educational inequity by raising awareness and rallying community support for their needs; and by galvanizing and guiding volunteers to teach, mentor, and nourish the children so they may develop academic and life skills to realize their God-given potential.
