Nature Store Volunteer, Fremont California
ORGANIZATION: San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society
Please visit the new page to apply.
As a Friends Group for the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex, we coordinate volunteers to operate a small Nature Store inside the Don Edwards SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center.
Nature Store Coordinator (work with a partner in this position): this is a long-term position helping to manage the store and volunteers in the shift positions, see below. Duties include recruiting, training, and scheduling shift volunteers, tracking the inventory, and making recommendations for new items. If you are interested in taking on a large degree of oversight for the operations of the Nature Store and Visitors Center, please respond to this posting with "help coordinate" in your response.
Nature Store shift volunteers (positions open Saturday and Sunday): In addition to processing sales at the store and keeping things neat, we will train you to engage and respond to Refuge visitors, answer questions, and help orient the visitors to trails, programs, and other activities. We are seeking people with an interest in nature and wildlife, and who enjoy talking with others to help them learn to appreciate and enjoy nature and learn about wildlife and habitat preservation. Our expectation is that you will volunteer at least once a month on a regular basis, (with some exceptions for your vacations and the like).
Both positions:
Volunteers in these positions may go on to help in other ways over time. Some have developed their own public programs, or come up with ideas for improvements that reach visitors in different ways. You will work with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff, and be part of a group of friendly, dedicated volunteers.
We will now be opening on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, and Sundays 10am-2pm when available trained volunteers make that possible. If we have no volunteers, that will cancel the Visitor Center/Nature Store opening on that day.

Mission Statement
The San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society seeks to nurture in the public a sense of understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuges, their natural and cultural history, and to conserve, preserve, and restore bay lands as essential wildlife habitat.
Description
San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society was founded in 1987 as a not-for-profit Friends Group supporting the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Complex, one of the first and largest Refuges to preserve and protect wildlife in an urban area, and among more than 500 refuges managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. We help to organize the communities of the Bay area, to coordinate volunteer support and educate the public about the importance of caring for our local habitat and ecosystems; addressing issues from clean water and pollution prevention to recreational opportunities that nurture an appreciation for nature and stewardship for the wildlife that share our world. Through our programs thousands of school children have grown up to understand nature through hands-on science. We have assisted with many projects, such as building trails and a native plant nursery, planning for and restoring habitat, supporting and celebrating volunteer efforts, special events, and much more. We would like you to join us to continue to expand our rich and diverse organization's future goals, and especially to help others learn to support our mission.
