826LA provides a variety of free programming throughout the week for students ages 6-18, designed to challenge and enchant while strengthening writing skills. Help with tutoring, field trips, and our In-Schools programming in Echo Park, Mar Vista, and across LA! Over 90% of our students identify as BIPOC and 70% identify as low-income. We are seeking volunteers who identify as Black an/or African American to provide unique mentorship to our Black and/or African American students in our writing programs.
"I first heard about the amazing work 826LA was doing through a dear friend. I signed up immediately when I learned about the wonderful opportunity to share my passion for writing, social justice, and working with youth. I am thrilled to be a part of such a dedicated and caring team of folks doing transformative and necessary work in so many communities."

Mission Statement
826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, we provide after school tutoring, reading and creative writing workshops, in-schools projects, and field trips! All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice. We have two brick and mortars in Mar Vista and Echo Park, as well as three Writers Rooms at Roosevelt High School, at Manual Arts High School, and at Venice High School.
Description
We have a high need for volunteers to support our day time Field Trips and In-Schools programs. You can help facilitate brainstorming sessions and share-outs, type up student ideas, and support the editing process. You'll also have the opportunity to work one-on-one or with a small group of students, on various writing projects ranging from personal statement essays, Catcher in the Rye essays, poetry, creative writing, and everything in between.
