Uptown Partners Real Estate & Development - AmeriCorps VISTA

ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group

Gain valuable nonprofit operations experience while making a difference as an AmeriCorps VISTA serving with Uptown Partners of Pittsburgh. Uptown Partners of Pittsburgh is a non-profit organization of residents and stakeholders collaboratively improving community quality of life by revitalizing Pittsburgh’s Uptown/Hill District Neighborhood. We work to rebuild Uptown’s mixed-income population by reclaiming vacant/blighted properties, encouraging residential development, supporting small businesses, and fostering sustainable development.

As a member of the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group (PCRG), Uptown Partners collaborates with other community-based non-profits across the region to achieve economic justice and racial equity through community revitalization efforts. PCRG sponsors a cohort of 10 AmeriCorps VISTAs who serve for one year at a community-based nonprofit in the Pittsburgh area to grow their organizational capacity to uplift residents out of poverty. As part of the PCRG VISTA cohort, a VISTA member placed at Uptown Partners will serve by furthering work that invests in community and economic development to improve quality of life and increase access to capital/economic opportunity for under-resourced communities.

To this end, the VISTA’s core responsibilities during their service year with Uptown Partners will include conducting research, prepare case studies, prepare marketing materials for new development, and support program development to help build an equitable and sustainable Uptown community. Activities will include assessing community needs to grow the supply of affordable housing in the Uptown community. The VISTA will also assess the state of our outreach and marketing efforts and improve those systems to market and revive the commercial corridor to bring economic opportunity to the community. Finally, they will help tackle food insecurity by supporting monthly food distribution and no cost farmers market events and increasing engagement around the Uptown community gardens. Through this year of service, the VISTA will learn about equitable development and community-based nonprofit operation, and gain research and outreach skills, while getting to know the Hill District.

The PCRG VISTA program has been successful in advancing the careers of its VISTA members, who are given opportunities for professional development (i.e., classes, conferences, etc.) while gaining experience in nonprofit operations. About 70% of VISTAs that complete their year with one of PCRG’s host sites go on to staff positions at community non-profits, while the other 30% have pursued higher education, often supported by the end-of-service education award. A VISTA year also provides benefits such as student loan deferment, healthcare, childcare assistance, relocation assistance, and more.
