SMART Reading (Jefferson County, OR) | http://www.SMARTReading.org
SMART Reading is looking for volunteer Site Coordinators, Readers and substitute Readers to facilitate reading sessions with children in Madras and Warm Springs. SMART pairs adult volunteers with PreK through third-grade students for fun, child-guided reading sessions and books to keep. The goal of each reading session is to have fun with books and help kids foster a love of reading. Joining SMART as a volunteer is a great way to get involved in your local school community!
You’ll have the opportunity from October through May to:
- Read with children at the same time each week.
- Work alongside the Site Coordinator (the lead volunteer) to provide a positive environment for students.
- Attend Reader training and receive ongoing support.
- Complete required documentation during the reading sessions.
- Follow all SMART Reading safety policies.
- Network with other community members around early childhood literacy.
- Assist children in choosing books to keep to build their own libraries!
SMART reading days and times vary depending on the individual site.

Mission Statement
At SMART Reading, we believe that reading is the gateway to learning and opportunity for Oregon’s kids. Every day we mobilize our statewide community to make a direct impact by connecting kids, books, and volunteers who understand that education creates a brighter future for all. Because the simple magic and joy of a shared book can change a child’s life trajectory.
Description
SMART Reading is a children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest need schools and marginalized communities with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: shared reading time and books to keep.
We pair thousands of Oregon kids with community volunteers for regular one-on-one or group read-alouds designed to build confidence, literacy skills, and a love of reading. All of the children we serve also get to choose two books each month to keep. Through the Children’s Book Bank at SMART Reading, volunteers in the Portland area help clean and restore community-donated books that are distributed to thousands more kids to help fill homes and lives with high-interest, inclusive books.
SMART offers a range of volunteer roles including Readers who spend an hour a week reading with students, Site Coordinators who oversee program implementation at one of our sites, Book Bank volunteers who help sort, clean, restore and distribute community-donated books, and more.
