Position Summary
Garden Railroad Volunteers oversee preparing and running the San Diego Model Railroad Museum’s garden layout including running trains and helping our guests enjoy the exhibit. This is a great opportunity for anyone with an interest in history, model trains or gardening and will be under the direction of Chief Docent.
Responsibilities
· Prepare display areas around the Garden Layout for opening and closing
· Clean and maintain the wheels and tracks of the layout and the equipment in preparation for museum guests
· Interact with guests and assist with interactive elements of the garden
· Water and maintain centennial garden railway, plants and structures
· Understand safety policies and actively promote safe practices
Skills:
· Must be dependable and punctual
· Ability to work well and communicate with members of the public and fellow museum staff
· Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
Requirements
· Must be 18+ years old
· Ability to physically walk and climb stairs
· Ability to bend, squat, and lift 15 to 20 pounds
· No prior train knowledge necessary
· Volunteers must train with the Chief Docent for at least five days before they are able to work on their own
· We request that volunteers complete no less than two shifts per month
· All shifts are from 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday
