Volunteer Purpose
The Kitchen Assistant Volunteer will assist the kitchen in completing food service tasks that are essential to the operations of the café. Great volunteer activity for individuals or a couple of friends, colleagues or partners!
Tasks
- Assist kitchen staff to maintain a generally clean, organized, and well labeled kitchen
- Dishwashing
- Prepare fresh items for cooking or service
- Prep salad bar components and stage in a functional manner
- Steam table preparation as needed
- Assist with beverages and front of house items as needed
Ideally a volunteer would be available for two hours during the afternoon once per week.
Competencies
- Ability to receive verbal and/or written instructions and follow prescribed steps
- Able to approach situations with calm
- Basic knife skills in a culinary setting
- Have the capacity to learn food safety techniques
- Adaptable and flexible
- Easily approachable
- Ability to be trained in a fast-paced atmosphere
Training/Supervision
- The volunteer will be trained and supervised by the One City Café Chef and Operations Manager.

Description
Food: Bishop Sullivan Center operates two food pantries and One City Cafe, a community kitchen that provides nutritious lunch and dinner every weekday.
Jobs: Our employment programs seeks to remove barriers that prevent people from finding and keeping employment. We also operate two computer labs and assist with job searches and resume building.
Aid: We provide financial assistance to low-income families in the form of utility, rent or other needed assistance.
