Arizona Youth Conservation Workforce Development (AZYCWD) - Program Assistant
Arizona Sustainability Alliance (AZSA) Mission

- Mission: Support native ecosystems, maintain and restore our desert habitats, protect biological diversity, and inspire youth to engage in responsible outdoor recreation within Arizona parks and preserves.

To provide opportunities to youth from underserved communities by creating educational and career pathways in the environmental conservation sector
Objectives - Arizona Youth Conservation Workforce Development Program
- Improve access to the conservation sector for youth from underserved communities disproportionately impacted by environmental degradation
- Provide job skills and develop college and career pathways for high school students from disadvantaged and Title I schools to meet the rising employment demand for the conservation sector
Role Purpose
Assist with administrative activities to support the success of all aspects of this program (design, implementation, and evaluation) by working with the Workforce Development Program Manager, AZSA volunteers, and program partners. This is a one-year workforce development program that will begin in the Fall of 2022 and end in the Spring of 2023. The program is expected to continue and expand into multiple tracks across multiple schools and increase the number of participants.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Workforce Development Program Manager on various aspects related to the program (ex., Conservation sector trends in sustainability, nature conservation workforce needs, educational training, and professional development options)
- Collaborate with AZSA team, when necessary, to brainstorm ideas for the current program track
- Engage program participants during the program meetings with guidance from AZSA Workforce Development Program Manager
- Assist with preparing or proofreading various program-related documents such as the monthly program newsletter, blogs, program manual, training materials, standard operating procedures (SOP), etc.
- Be responsive to the AZSA team and Workforce Development Program Manager
- Assist with AYCWD field trip implementation and coordination (i.e., work with Arizona Game and Fish, outside organizations, and Workforce Development Program Manager)
- Attend and assist AZYCWD field trips, when needed, out at Robbins Butte Wildlife Area and other locations
Ideal Skill Set
- Experience as a Program or Project Coordinator (Preferred)
- Background or high level of interest in the conservation sector (i.e., water conservation, riparian restoration, land management, wildlife habitat management, etc.)
- Experience working with educators and youth
- Experience cultivating and maintaining relationships with professional partners
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Intermediate, or higher, level experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to draft professional written communication
- Self-starter who can work independently and as a team member
- Entrepreneurial; Enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
- Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred but not required
Time Commitment: Approximately 5-10 hours per week
Location
All AZSA volunteer staff positions are remote, with periodic fieldwork and other necessary in-person activities specific to this position. While all volunteer staff positions are remote, this position requires the person to physically reside in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.
