Different shifts available throughout the day

  • Morning
  • Afternoon
  • Evening

Volunteering with WaterFire is a rewarding experience, meet new people, and be in the middle of the largest free art event in Providence!

Different opportunities available:

  • Morning Build Crew: Hop on a wood boat bright and early to help construct the braziers that will set
the city alight at sunset. You will get the chance to artistically construct the braziers, and reload
firewood into the boats for the evening. Afterwards enjoy lunch with fellow volunteers and staff. (16+)
  • Morning/Afternoon Setup and Event Preparations: Join us in the afternoon to help our team
continue setting up for the WaterFire Lighting in the evening. This opportunity can range anywhere from
setting up tents, tables, and linens on shore. Come prepared to work and get your hands dirty.
  • Special Ops: Become one-part ceremony leader and one-part crowd control all while getting the best
seat in the house. Help lead our torch procession and ceremony that can vary in size from sixteen
torches to a couple hundred. (18+)
  • Fire Tender: Maintain fires and keep pace with the overall performance. Throughout the night you will
be placing logs onto braziers to rekindle fires, reload firewood into the boat from under bridges, all
while working with fellow crew members to uphold the artistic integrity of the installation. (18+)
  • Ambassador of Light/Main Merch: Come in the evening for the WaterFire lighting and interact with
the public by creating a welcoming environment at one of our many stations on shore. If you are looking for a fun, social opportunity this is the position for you. Be prepared to hand out glow sticks, stickers or other items displayed on the table in return for a donation to keep the fires burning along with the merchandise at each station.
  • Starfield or "Starry, Starry Night": Visitors to WaterFire can "wish upon a star" of their own at this
magical installation in Memorial Park where blue paper star lanterns are nestled in the treetops of this
dark and dreamy grove. Volunteers are needed to help welcome visitors, assist in hanging stars, and
placing Luminaria lanterns where they are needed. This is a quiet, yet busy location; volunteers can
    expect frequent interactions with visitors.

Mission Statement

WaterFire Providence's mission is to inspire Providence and its visitors by revitalizing the urban experience, fostering community engagement, and creatively transforming the city by presenting WaterFire for all to enjoy.

Description

WaterFire Providence Brings Art to the Community, by the Community

WaterFire Providence is known for the lightings that take place downtown with local artists and food vendors. We hope to get back to lightings downtown later this year but for now our main focus is the WaterFire Arts Center (WFAC)! Since the pandemic WaterFire continued to create art for the community, by the community at the WFAC.

WaterFire Providence Volunteers are an integral part of every event we host. They assist in all aspects of event production, special projects, and anything else we dream up.

Volunteers build, perform, inspire, engage, and enjoy! WaterFire volunteers come from all walks of life, and we appreciate the diversity and talents that are among them. Over the years, a network of volunteers has been established, and we are delighted at the community that they have become.
