NYG&B

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B) preserves, documents, and shares family history and stories from across New York State. We engage with genealogists, biographers, historians, and organizations to establish the broader contexts of New York’s past. We actively foster connections between New York’s past and present.

We are seeking skilled volunteers who can commit to 2-4 hours per day, 1 day per week, to assist with a variety of projects and tasks related to our digital collections. Proficiency in Excel, Google Sheets, and working with files in Windows (naming, saving, moving, copying) is required.

Examples of projects and tasks include:

  • Assisting with organizing physical documents so that they may be indexed
  • Identifying what needs to be indexed in a specific collection and creating spreadsheets for that indexing project
  • Indexing records in a Google Sheet or Excel sheet using physical documents or online records
  • Doing quality control of images using image software in the office (training provided)
  • Scanning records using a high-powered scanner in the office (training provided)
  • Saving images to an external drive and copying the files to another computer
Experience using or working with historical records and handwritten documents is a plus. Genealogy and family history enthusiasts with computer skills and experience researching online collections are encouraged to sign up!
