Environmental volunteer opportunities available with ETIV to help identify ways to promote and ensure increased and sustainable environmental conservation in and around Itacaré, Brazil. Our main goal is to develop a new generation of local (Brazilian) youth leaders that will actively care for each other, their community and the environment. This project includes an educational campaign with fun and interactive trainings and activities to teach children and youth how incredibly important it is to take care of our natural environment and work together to combat global climate change.
Furthermore, this year, we are focusing on teaching the community how to grow their own fruits and vegetables.
Volunteers will also have the freedom and flexibility to also focus on micro projects of interest with the community; from recycling to organic gardening, a neighborhood cleanup and a mangrove restoration project and we can even accept volunteers that want to help us develop our online environmental conservation campaign. We also organize monthly activities relating to environmental days, for example World Dat. The possibilities are endless!
This position is an unpaid volunteer position, that will help create a generation of change agents that will allow the individual to contribute to this small community, learn Portuguese and Brazilian culture, as well as acquire organizational and leadership skills.
Main Responsibilities:
- To support development of the curriculum while also preparing the lesson plans and documenting everything so that it can be re-used and built upon in the future.
- To support development of the weekly environmental trainings with youth.
- To take attendance and document outcomes including successes, challenges and best practices for every class.
- To teach many of the core values that lay the foundation for ETIV's work, also listed on our website.
- To manage our organic garden/compost and recycling at the volunteer house and gardens.
- To support our mangrove restoration work.
- Help respond to emergency environmental events when they take place, for example right now we have more crude oil washing up on our beaches and we need more support to clean up the chunks of crude oil that we are finding on our beaches.
Secondary responsabilities:
An important value at Etiv, is to allow the volunteer to grow and make use of all the strengths one may have. Therefore, we encourage all our volunteers to participate in our many projects and sometimes even create their own. You will need to assist in other programs if needed and participate in our monthly events.
Requirements:
- Volunteers must work at least 20 hours per week
- Interns must work at least 30 hours per week*
- Background in biology or ecology (preferred)
- Experience with environmental issues or environmental studies (preferred)
- Basic Portuguese**
- Minimum 1 month time commitment
*Interns will receive a certificate of completion, which could be exchanged for university credit. Please refer to your university for more information
**For those who do not speak Portuguese, we do offer an audio class that you can listen to before arriving. We also have contacts with teachers down here in Itacaré

However, you are allowed to find your own accommodation, but a fee for training, materials and a small donation to the Etiv organization, will be required, totaling an amount of 300USD$.

Most interns can receive university credit while interning with our NGO. ETIV is deeply focused on youth development and environmental conservation in Brazil. As a result, one of our main goals is to develop a new generation of local youth leaders that actively care for each other, their community, the environment and all sentient beings. This is the main avenue by which we work to achieve our Mission and Vision (highlighted below).
Through all of our community projects, we encourage volunteers to teach and model some of the core values necessary to create and maintain healthy and prosperous communities. This includes mutual respect, cultural appreciation, caring for each other, speaking the truth, acting honestly and transparently, sharing and being generous (as opposed to stealing or taking things that don’t belong to you) and actively caring for the environment and all sentient beings.
