Guide students and families through the international exchange experience while developing your own cross-cultural communication skills. As a key part of the AFS support network, you’ll work directly with international high school students and their U.S. host families to foster a life-changing journey for both parties.

The AFS Liaison is a volunteer identified as the primary contact for an AFS participant for the duration of their program. Liaisons provide ongoing support for AFS students and their host families and as such, are key to the AFS support network. The Liaison serves as the "first responder" in the communication network connecting with the local AFS volunteer leadership and staff as needed to provide participant support.

Through regular meetings with you, an AFS student can get the most out of their experience in the U.S. You’ll have help from a community of local volunteers and staff, creating an opportunity for learning and sharing as you navigate the intriguing cultural differences that make the exchange experience so rich and rewarding.

If you enjoy problem-solving, meeting new people from around the world, and facilitating intercultural understanding, this role could be the right fit for you!

What’s Involved:

  • Check in regularly with students, host families, and schools
  • Develop strong relationships with students and families
  • Identify and work through cultural differences
  • Prepare written records of your meetings

There are many other ways you can volunteer in the AFS community too! Do you speak another language? Would you like to work with an exchange student that is in the US for a semester or year program?

We are also always looking for host families. If you would be open to welcoming a student into your home while they attend your local high school, please let us know.

Mission Statement

100 years of volunteerism. 75 years of exchange. AFS-USA honors the legacy of its founders--volunteer WWI and WWII American Field Service ambulance drivers--who emerged from the wars with a bold mission: to help prevent future conflict through cultural exchange and understanding. As a partner in the global AFS network, AFS-USA offers international exchange and education opportunities in over 45 countries and hosts exchange students from 80 countries. True to the spirit of our founders, these intercultural programs are made possible by the dedicated work of AFS Volunteers--more than 3,000 in the U.S. and over 50,000 worldwide. Our diverse study abroad programs vary in length from a year to a few weeks and cover timely and timeless topics such as sustainability and language learning. What every program has in common is a commitment to fostering intercultural and global competence in our students, host families, schools, and communities.
