Are you someone who enjoys seeing the finished product of an author's book? Would you like to assist incarcerated authors publish their books? Currently, our organization is looking for several volunteers to assist with publishing 100 books written by incarcerated authors as part of out "100 Prisoner Book Publishing Literacy Program" and partnership with Stony Brook University. (Learn more at www.acls.org [search United Black Family Scholarship Foundation]) This is a volunteer position with an option for a stipend (per availability of funding) per completion of each book published.


WHAT YOU WILL DO:


  • Collaborate with our organization's Program Director, university partners, and other such designees in the management of author material;

  • Collaborate with graphic designer to create book cover art;

  • File and submit manuscripts for copyright;

  • Format and upload book manuscripts, author bios, book descriptions, and other such information as need for self-publishing platforms;

  • Purchase and assign ISBNs;

  • Contract eBook formatting services;

  • Collaborated with website developer to create book distribution website;

  • Perform other such duties as required in the publication process.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:


  • Ability to effectively manage deadlines and multitask;

  • Ability to work in fast paced and professional environment;

  • Willingness to work with incarcerated persons;

  • Must have computer, ability to print manuscripts (if necessary), and proficiency in Microsoft Office;

  • Minimum of two years' experience with self-publishing platforms (e.g., KDP, Ingram Sparks, etc.);

  • Experience with formatting manuscripts, purchasing ISBNs, and filing digital material with the U.S. Electronic Copyright Office.

The United Black Family Scholarship Foundation is a 501c3, nonprofit organization that operates in Oklahoma, California, and New York. Established in 2014, it is a student and volunteer ran organization that was founded by incarcerated activist and author Ivan Kilgore. Our Vision: We believe everyone has a right to education that empowers them with solutions to social and economic problems caused by poverty and racism.
