Volunteer Assignments & Duties

Volunteer positions vary depending on needs and interests. The following is a general description of most Pride Festival Volunteer positions. All Volunteer positions require attendance at a general training prior to the day of the Festival.

Day Before Pride Festival - FridayPride Set-Up

Description: Pride Set-Up Volunteers assist with preparing and/or decorating the Festival grounds prior to the event. This includes, but is not limited to, marking the designated vendor and exhibitor sites and setting up tents and tables.

Requirements: This position requires some physical activity and may require lifting, bending, and standing for long periods. Some volunteers should be adept with decorating and/or handiwork skills.

Timing: Volunteers must be available the evening before the Pride Festival. Specific times are determined closer to the date of the event.

Day of Pride - SaturdayVendor & Exhibitor Check-In

12 to 24 volunteers

Description: Vendor & Exhibitor Check-In Volunteers assist with the direction of vendors and exhibitors to their designated festival locations. This may include table setup, traffic management, and/or passing out vendor information packets/ envelopes.

Requirements: This position requires some physical activity, which may include walking and navigating stairs or ramps. Accommodations for those with ambulatory limitations may be possible with prior arrangements.

Timing: Volunteers MUST be on the Festival grounds by 6:00 AM and should be available 10:30 AM.

Gate Attendant / Bucket Brigade

4 - 6 volunteers per shift per gate, typically 2 gates

Description: Volunteers serving as Gate Attendants and on the Bucket Brigade have the opportunity to be a part of the Pride Festival welcoming committee by collecting entrance donations or passing out Pride Guides at event entry point(s).

Requirements: Volunteers collecting money must have good math skills including knowing how to make change. These positions require some physical activity and long periods of standing. Accommodations for those with special needs might be possible with prior arrangements.

Timing: Shift times are typically from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM (3 hours) or from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM (3.5 hours).

Gate Captain

1 volunteer per gate

Description: Gate Captains are responsible for the smooth operation and management of the festival entry and exit points. They manage and supervise the collection of entrance donations and manning of the gates in their area of responsibility. Gate Captains are considered Festival Staff and manage/adjust volunteers assignments to their gate as needed.

Requirements: This position will require the volunteer to stand for long periods of time and have the math, people, and supervisory skills necessary to manage and support Gate Attendant/Bucket Brigade Volunteers.

Timing: Gate Captains are required to work the entire day of the Festival from 9:00 AM - 6:30 PM. These positions also require training in addition to the general training for all volunteers.

Bullpen Volunteer

4 - 6 volunteers per shift

Description: Bullpen volunteers assist with various tasks and assignments as assigned by Board Members. These might include working the information booth, assisting at entertainment stages, picking up trash, running messages, or other miscellaneous errands. Due to the need-based nature of this role, specific duties cannot be determined in advance.

Requirements: The physical demands for this position is unknown; however, those with special needs may serve to the extent they are able.

Timing: Shifts are typically four hours long and set for the following intervals: 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Clean-Up

4-6 volunteers

Description: Clean-Up Volunteers assist with any teardown needs, walk the grounds to pick up any trash, place trash boxes near the sidewalk for removal, and ensure the site is immaculate after the Festival.

Requirements: This position requires physical work including some lifting, walking, carrying, bending, and other related tasks.

Timing: Volunteers must be available at the end and after the Festival. The clean-up work typically begins around 6:00 PM after most of the Festival patrons and vendors have vacated the park and lasts for about three hours. The total time commitment depends on the quantity of volunteers and amount of clean-up needed.

Day after Pride - SundayDecoration removal

Description: Decoration Removal Volunteers help take down decorations and prepare items for storage. This might include taking down tables and/or chairs if tasks were not completed on the prior evening.

Requirements: This position requires some physical activity and could require lifting, folding, and/or carrying items.

Timing: Volunteers must be available the morning following the Pride Festival. Specific times are determined closer to the date of the event.

We created the following Goals to support our mission:

  • Promote awareness of and showcase organizations available to the LGBT community;
  • Provide a safe environment for people of the LGBT community to celebrate their diversity;
  • Support local economic growth by attracting individuals to the Harrisburg Capital Region;
  • Raise funds / provide charitable contributions to other LGBT and community organizations.
