The Closter Nature Center needs to substantially expand its team of volunteers for trail maintenance and invasive species removal. We are looking for physically able volunteers at different levels of skill and time commitment to join in this important work for the sustainability of our 136-acre forest and 3 miles of hiking trails.

YOU could be a highly valued member of this very important team!


Requirements: Adults 18 years or older, familiar with the operation of gasoline-powered lawn mower and string trimmer and fueling requirements for two- and four-stroke engines.

Description: Trail Maintainers will be responsible for regular maintenance of the three-plus miles of trails at the Closter Nature Center. Two-hour-a-week commitment is preferred, this commitment can be broken into two one-hour segments and done at your convenience any day of the week. Areas to be maintained will be provided by the Trails Supervisor prior to start.

Mission Statement

The Closter Nature Center Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of 136-acres in Closter, N.J. It includes 3-miles of trails, ponds, brooks, meadows, and forests maintained in a natural condition. It is an organization that promotes hiking, fishing, picnicking, nature photography, bird watching, and exploring. At the heart of Closter Nature Center is the mission to conserve natural resources, educate individuals of all ages, and to elevate recreational experiences to build a greater appreciation for the natural world. For 60 years, Closter Nature Center has provided opportunities for people to become active and at ease outdoors, to develop a greater understanding of the connection between humans and nature, and to appreciate the natural world as a source of learning and adventure. People visit Closter Nature Center for community events, group walks in the woods, family programs, and year-round classes for individuals of all ages.

Description

In 1961, the Mayor and Council established a committee to study the prospects of a nature center. The Closter Nature Center Association (CNC) was founded in 1962. The dedicated volunteers and Trustees of today continue this very important work of maintaining open space and educational programming for the next generation.

Objectives
Conservation- To preserve a significant tract of land in its natural state, with all its diversity of plants and animals.
Education- To foster appreciation for the wonders of nature and understanding of how people and these natural systems are interrelated
Recreation- To provide trails and facilities so that the land may be freely available for those who would use it to exercise, explore or relax.

The Closter Nature Center manages 136 acres of forested wetlands, including 3 miles of trails, provides a sanctuary for flora and fauna in the heart of a suburban landscape, conducts lecture series on relevant topics, employs an award-winning Naturalist, is recognized in "Best of Bergen" Magazine in "Places To Go And Things To Do" category, provides a haven for outdoor activity, engages 3,000 children annually in classrooms and at the Nature Center

Volunteerism: We are looking for volunteers who meet our current needs for diversity of backgrounds and skill sets such as: Committee & Board Membership, Trail Maintenance, Community Outreach, Program Assistant, Social Media/Marketing, Fundraising
