Mule Care Volunteers

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Mule Care Volunteers assist with the feeding, grooming, care, and public interpretation of our working mules. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is looking for dedicated and dependable volunteers that can assist our mule care specialist. Work is often difficult and physically strenuous. It also regularly involves interacting with and educating the public.


Strong applicants will: have equine and/or livestock experience; have a positive and can-do attitude; have a collaborative mentality and look for ways to contribute their own unique knowledge, skills, and background; be dependable and professional when representing the National Park Service.


Job hazards include exposure to poison ivy, copperheads, sun, extreme heat, wind, rain, uneven terrain, slippery surfaces, mud, biting insects, and ticks. Mules are large, powerful animals that add additional risk all duties.
