ORGANIZATION: Be A Mentor, Inc.

Black School Boy Smiling

Did you know that youth living in lower income neighborhoods are 30% more likely to enter the juvenile justice system?

But youth with a mentor are set up to reach their highest potential and be successful. We are looking for caring, trusted adults to sign up today!!

This is an in-person mentoring program. This mentoring opportunity will begin with an 8 week cohort of mentors and mentees meeting together in Richmond. During this time, mentors and mentees will get to know each other. At the end of the 8 weeks, you will be matched with one mentee for one calendar year. You'll spend at least one hour a week with your mentee in the community exploring, talking, and learning about and advocating for their needs.

1 on 1 mentoring gives students more opportunities for success regardless of their background. It’s especially important for youth who may not have consistent adults in their lives to connect with.

All mentors are required to complete a background check and training. And our mentoring coordinator will be available for support throughout the program. We ask that you commit to at least 2-hours per week for a full calendar year. Consistency is important to build trust between you and your mentee.

We have a strong need for BIPOC mentors to support and connect with our diverse mentees. Although we welcome everyone with an interest in mentoring to sign up!

Be A Mentor, Inc. has been positively interacting with youth since its founding in 1992 and continues to connect youth with dedicated volunteer adults throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. We provide a direct mentoring service to youth (such as those in foster care; with incarcerated parents; susceptible to gang participation, drug/alcohol abuse or teen parenting; homeless/in transition or academically struggling).

Description

The Be A Mentor Program pairs caring adult volunteers from the community with youth in one-to-one relationships. Mentors give of their time to be a friend, answering questions, and providing guidance. Mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and occupations and volunteer their personal time to be a caring friend to a youth. They serve as a role model, advocate, and resource. The purpose of the mentoring relationship is to help youth develop their full potential, both in and outside of the classroom.
