For the Fall 2024 issue, Berkeley Speaks Newspaper will address the critical issues of the complex local election.

On November 5, city voters will elect a new mayor and decide on four council members, school board and rent stablization board members. We'll also help elect a new county Supervisor and state senator, decide on our Assembly member, vote on a recall of the progressive District Attorney. Finally, voters will decide a number of ballot measures including climate, public health, rent control, and street upgrades.

We need you to help our readers make sense of all these decisions. You can help as we dive into the social issues underlying the ballot races, like homelessness and affordable housing, public safety, climate action, and even international issues including Gaza.

The election is approaching quickly--voting begins in early October! Contact Berkeley Speaks today to volunteer.

We're proud of our first three issues, which are full of beauty, art, celebration of grassroots initiatives, and constructive critique of local government.

Now we want to move more into investigative journalism. Wikipedia describes this form of journalism as one in which "reporters deeply investigate a single topic of interest, such as serious crimes, racial injustice, political corruption, or corporate wrongdoing." There is plenty of interest to investigate in Berkeley, for people with heart and passion.

We are additionally in need of volunteers who can do web-design with Wordpress, photograph, illustrate, publicize, use social media, and write grants.

To review our first three issues, please visit berkeleyspeaks.org. Thank you for your interest.

Mission Statement

"Berkeley Speaks Newspaper" is a free online news outlet focused on issues of social justice in our city. We provide news and analysis of issues such as housing and homelessness, public and mental/behavioral health, and policing, among others.

Description

Young and veteran advocates from grassroots movements, progressive CBOs, and city commissions, and people with backgrounds in journalism and local government have come together to create Berkeley Speaks Newspaper, an online paper dedicated to social justice and human rights in our city.

There is no other newspaper in the Berkeley area that is dedicated to social change. As people who are working to improve, or even save the world, we know what is missing. We intend to make the social and political issues of the day clear to the community, so that regular people can make informed decisions that affect the future of the city.

Berkeley Speaks Newspaper will provide accurate information, clear analysis, and investigative journalism. Readers, whose trust we rely on, deserve reporting that remains civil and avoids stereotyping.

The Society of Professional Journalists urges that "all people in all media...recognize a special obligation to serve as watchdogs over public affairs and government. Seek to ensure that the public’s business is conducted in the open, and that public records are open to all." We are taking up that challenge.
