When you volunteer to drive, your rewards are great:
* Satisfaction from helping a neighbor
* Friendly chats with someone who may be lonely
* Appreciation for providing a much-needed service
Why Join the FISH Volunteer Team:
* All rides are within Maine Township, IL boundaries (8-14 miles average round-trip)
* FISH provides excess auto insurance above driver's personal auto coverage
* Volunteers choose when and whether to accept a ride request based on their schedule
* Volunteer drivers receive gas subsidy ($10) for completed round-trips
Volunteer drivers should live in or very near Maine Township, IL (Park Ridge, Des Plaines, parts of Niles and Morton Grove). After application, interview, and orientation, new drivers become part of a team. Team drivers are telephoned by the FISH Ride Coordinator in response to ride requests from the community. Requests come in 7-10 days in advance of medical appointments. Team drivers who accept a ride request, mark their calendars, and telephone their client the day before the appointment. Drivers typically wait for clients at the medical facility. For longer visits, drivers may drop off and pick-up the client, using the time to run errands. Drivers notify the Ride Coordinator if the appointment has changed or been cancelled for any reason.
