The Department of Health and Human Services is currently in need of volunteers to serve as guardians for Protected Persons. Protected Persons are typically individuals with mental illness, disabilities, or dementia. Often, family members of these individuals are not able to serve as guardian, and we look to caring community members for help.
Guardians work with professionals from HHS and other services agencies to make placement and treatment decisions for the client. Thus, a guardian may be asked to sign admission requests for hospitals, complete applications for government assistance, and monitor the ward's treatment and condition. Guardians also make a brief yearly report to the court. If additional court involvement is necessary, the county attorney's office can help file the necessary paperwork. Guardians make a big difference for some of our community's most needy individuals!
"As a person who retired recently, I wanted to find a way to keep myself busy and at the same time use some of the skills I have learned over my lifetime so far to help me stay active and stay mentally sharp. This opportunity as a volunteer for IDHS serving as a conservator or guardian with the support of a social worker was perfect for me. It really makes me feel like I am serving my community and staying lively and active. And I’m getting to meet some wonderful people too." Volunteer
"I started volunteering because it breaks my heart to see older adults that are all alone without any visitors. It is very rewarding to brighten someone’s day. There are so many others that need a caring person to help improve their quality of life." Volunteer
