Our volunteers are currently working with participants remotely via Zoom, WhatsApp, Skype, etc. We serve refugees, asylum-seekers, and immigrants from around the world: Ukraine, Afghanistan, Burma, Mexico, Sudan, Syria, Ecuador and Venezuela.
The Vocational English Language Training (VELT) team is specifically looking for volunteers who are available tutor one-on-one digitally or in person once or twice a week. Our tutors work with adult participants on basic English literacy, conversational English, job interview practice, Citizenship preparation, and more.
Program requirements:
- Commit to 1-3 hours a week for at least 3 months.
- Attend a virtual Heartland new volunteer orientation on Zoom.
- Complete a free, 12-hour pre-service Tutor Essentials tutor training through Literacy Works. This training will provide you with the tools to be a successful English tutor for our program participants.
- Become a mandated reporter through the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS). Volunteer Application: RICS Uptown Volunteer Application Form (office.com)
- Must be an Illinois resident due to funder requirements
- A background check is required.

Description
Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) partners with refugees, asylees, immigrants and survivors of trafficking to address their needs by connecting them to their new community, providing education and employment services, and the help they need to succeed in their new country. RICS annually resettles more than 150 individuals in Chicago from places like Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Ukraine, and Syria. RICS serves an additional 500 refugees through a variety of services including cultural orientation, adjustment counseling, employment, job readiness and placement services, as well as medical case management, family literacy, and English language training for adults.
