WHAT MENTORS DO
- Build a strong support system for your young person through connections and dedicated one-on-one interactions. Your interactions can be anything from talks over coffee, going for a hike, play a sport together, assisting mentee in applying for jobs, share a meal, etc.
- Participate in monthly FLY-sponsored group activities. Examples are attending sporting events, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, a beach BBQ, go-kart racing, and a ropes course!
- Agree to write and submit court reports prior to their mentee’s hearings. W also strongly encourage you to attend court hearings to speak on behalf of their mentee.
- COVID-19: While we respect the comfort levels of each of our mentors and young peoples, the mentorship interactions are all in-person, programming can be modified to fit each comfort level. Post-pandemic we're supporting our young people with many of the anxieties and apprehensions that have come about regarding social interactions and being in social settings by providing safe interactions through fun prosocial activities they can do with their mentors and peers.
- Make a sustainable, long-term difference in your community.
- Get experience with system-involved youth, as well as a ground-level view of the juvenile justice system and relationships with system partners like judges, probation officers and attorneys.
- If approved within your department, college internship credits can be earned throughout the duration of your experience and mentorship with FLY.
- 26 hours of initial training and orientation (mandatory).
- 3-hour development trainings once every three months on a Saturday morning (mandatory).
- Regular contact with a CAFA Mentor Program Case Manager for personalized support, advice, and encouragement. Contact by phone, email, or in person according to your preference.

Description
COURT APPOINTED FRIEND AND ADVOCATE (CAFA) MENTOR PROGRAM
For nearly two decades, FLY has trained and matched adult volunteer mentors with youth on probation. The mentors meet weekly with the youth to support them in developing new attitudes, behaviors, and ambitions. Each mentor/mentee match has a FLY case manager for support and also attends monthly group activities organized by FLY.
In partnership with the Probation department and the courts, FLY added a court advocacy component to address the fact that youth of color were failing a specific type of probation at significantly higher rates than white youth. FLY’s CAFA (Court Appointed Friend and Advocate) Mentor Program helped achieve a dramatic turnaround in the failure rates. Because of this success, all mentors are now granted legal standing to act as advocates for their mentees in the courtroom and at schools, and the program has also expanded to Alameda County.
