The Puget Sound Estuarium hosts two Walking Tours, Sea Stroll and Bird Walks, around downtown Olympia for the general public. The occur every other month starting with Bird Walk in February on the 4th Sunday 9-11am and Sea Strolls starting in March on the 2nd Sunday 1-3pm.
Sea Stroll is a historical walking tour around the old shoreline of Olympia. On this tour we cover the geologic history of Puget Sound, we honor the Coast Salish tribes that lived here, we talk about the European explorers, American colonist, and other cultures that helped build up Olympia into the town we see today, and what the effects of climate change means for its future.
Bird Walks are a birding hotspot tours around Olympia. During the Fall and Winter we walk around downtown and Capitol Lake to view the waterfowl migrants and residents. During the Spring and Summer we walk around the Port of Olympia to view the song birds and shore birds. We discuss bird identification tips and tricks, offer fun facts about the birds we spot, and talk about restoration projects in effect to bring back bird populations.
Volunteers help Help with visibility while walking through downtown, crossing streets, and keeping the group together. Chime in with bird facts, stories of Olympia's history, or personal experiences. Hand out brochures at the end, encourage participants to sign up for other walking tours, help with any clean up or finalizing the report on birds spotted.
