Mission Statement
The Mission of the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center is to provide high-quality, comprehensive and culturally appropriate primary healthcare to the communities of Washington and Yamhill Counties with a special emphasis on migrant and seasonal farmworkers and others with barriers to receiving health care.
Description
In 1975 the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center was established in memory of six year old Virginia Garcia, who accompanied her farmworker parents from Texas to Oregon to pick strawberries. Virginia Garcia developed an infection from a simple foot wound, and because of a lack of culturally appropriate medical services, she died. Stunned by this tragedy, community leaders joined forces in an unprecedented effort to ensure that such a tragedy would never be repeated.
Since our humble beginning in a three-car garage, Virginia Garcia has continued to provide health care to the medically needy of Washington and Yamhill Counties for over 40 years. It continues to focus on the needs of migrant farmworkers, both through the health center and outreach programs in the migrant camps. The center continues to develop and expand our programs to meet existing and emergent needs. We now serve more than 48,000 patients (1 in every 15 residents) each year from 5 primary care clinics, 6 dental clinics, 6 school-based health centers, a reproductive health clinic, and our mobile clinic.
This is an amazing organization which does great things for the community! Contact us for more information on how YOU can get involved!
