Volunteers get to make their own schedule!
Our Non-medical Hospice Volunteer provides support to patients living with a terminal illness. Support is provided in a variety of ways, including companionship, socialization, and caregiver relief. There is no medical background needed - our Hospice volunteers do not interact with the patient in medical or personal hygiene capacity (i.e., baths, moving or lifting, or giving medication).
Some examples of what a Direct Care Volunteer has the opportunity to do:
- Provide companionship
- Socialization and/or support to hospice patients and their families/caregivers
- Reading to the patient
- Playing games
- Writing letters to or on behalf of the patient
- Veteran to Veteran Visits - We Honor Veterans Program

Description
The goal of Amedisys Hospice Volunteers is to promote quality of life by being supportive to the patients, family members and caregivers to provide one or more of these comforts: Friendly supportive visits to the patient's place of residence, companionship, reading or writing letters with the patient, playing music or singing, craft projects with patients/caregivers, a smile, providing patient companionship while the caregiver runs errands. Administrative volunteers assist office staff by performing clerical work. Hospice exists to support and care for persons in their last stages of incurable illness, helping them live as fully and comfortably as possible. Amedisys volunteers are a part of the patient's support and care team.
