This opportunity is open to current junior high and high school students in New York and New Jersey only. You must have the ability to commute to Newark on Saturdays for an in-person practice 2pm to 4pm.
SoulPhamm is a new, nonprofit organization that provides sports and arts activities for young people in New Jersey and New York City. You can learn more about us by visiting www.soulphamm.org. Season: October to June.
Drumline Ambassadors help us build our team's visibility by learning the art of drumming/percussion. In this, you help us raise visibility for our organization, which in turn -
- Helps us attract new young musicians who don't know that we exist.
- Helps us strengthen the teaching ability of coaches and student coaching assistants.
- Helps us attract resources and possible funding.
- Helps position us as a premiere drumline - and positioning our team for ongoing performance and competitive opportunities.
- Help us advocate for music and arts programs which are constantly in jeopardy of losing their funding.
- Helps us create safe space for aspiring young artists who may want to pursue college scholarships or career paths in music.
The team is expected to include between five and ten young people and is expected to be fairly busy starting in the spring of 2025 - often being invited to perform in high visibility events such as NBA games (March 29th) and parades, so Ambassadors should come in with the mindset of preparing for immediate performance. Our majorettes are auditioning for the Presidential Inaugural Parade in January. If they make it, then it would be awesome if the drumline can participate in that event with them.
Beginners are WELCOME!!
Starting in November, we will set a weeknight virtual practice based on the schedules of the team and in person practices will be on Saturdays from 2pm to 4pm at the Newark YMCA.
We will verify the community service hours of participants (if needed) and will also serve as a professional reference once the participant has completed six months of the program.
There is an application that you would need to complete in order to start and of course, the program is free. We will then set an optional virtual meeting with participant and families to answer any questions. No phone calls please.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of young people by providing unique artistic and athletic experiences and performances, and to assist them in achieving the highest standards of professionalism through the development of discipline, skill, confidence, cooperation, leadership, responsibility and character.
Description
Our vision is to promote virtue, equity, unity, justice, faith, charity and a sense of common purpose and brotherhood among all people with an emphasis on the development and advancement of young people through education, athletics, service and the arts.
SoulPhamm was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the state of New Jersey on June 25, 2021 and is the "birth-child" of Coach Luis ("Lou") and Dr. Leisa Herrera ("Mz. Doc"). The organization exists to provide training to young people in a variety of sports and performing arts and unique opportunities to display those talents through competition and performance. By integrating mentoring, life skills, opportunities for community service and academic enrichment to the athletic/artistic program, we help make our scholar-athletes as well-rounded as possible, capable of meeting and overcoming any challenges they are faced with. Although Coach Lou passed away suddenly in January 2021, the official launch of SoulPhamm was held on June 26, 2021, which coincided with his birthday weekend. SoulPhamm will recognize its own founding, as well as the achievements of our young people every year on the fourth Saturday of June, as a tribute to the life and legacy of Coach Lou.
