Craft Volunteers

The San Mateo County History Museum joins with Casa Círculo Cultural for a Día de los Muertos event. Inside the History Museum, craft volunteers are needed to assist children with activities including:

  • Decorating a clay calavera, a representation of a human skull.
  • Creating paper flowers like those used to decorate altars or graves on Día de los Muertos.
  • Making your own papel picado, the colorful paper banners used to decorate homes, altars and public spaces around the time of the festival.
  • Designing an outfit for La Catrina, an iconic symbol of Día de los Muertos particularly in Mexico City.

Volunteers are also needed to assist with the line for the Festival of the Altar. Each year, 1,500+ people view the Festival of the Altars. Assistance is needed to keep the line moving so the maximum number of people can view the altars.

Location:

Mission Statement

The mission of the Historical Association is to provide meaningful learning experiences for the county's residents and guests with special attention devoted to children's programs.

Description

The San Mateo County Historical Association operates three historical sites: the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City, the Woodside Store in Woodside, and the Sanchez Adobe in Pacifica

The History Museum is located in the old San Mateo County Courthouse in downtown Redwood City. Built in 1910, the History Museum features professionally designed exhibit galleries and is, itself, a historical work of art. The museum approaches history in a unique, topical manner by looking at the county's natural resources, transportation, suburban life, commerce, and the diversity of its people.

Our exhibits give students an opportunity for experiential learning. Teachers tell us that, through hands-on experiences, students are much more likely to learn, appreciate, and integrate historical information into their current lives.

We also offer an exciting calendar of public programs including workshops, lectures, family days, and preschool story time.
