Mission
In Somali, ahdi means promise, an oath. And that’s the significance of our name. We at AHDI Promise are committed to strengthening communities in East Africa, particularly Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, and Ethiopia. By supporting and expanding partnerships with already established local schools, health centers, and environmental advocates in these countries, AHDI-promise can deliver the specific needs of the communities we serve. Our projects have local staff members that administer our programs on a volunteer basis.

Position: Board Member
The Board will support the work of the organization and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:
Leadership, governance, and oversight
- Serving as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director and the AHDI Promise team as they develop and implement AHDI’s strategic plan
- Approving AHDI’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions
- Being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
- Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by AHDI for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics
- Representing AHDI Promise to stakeholders and serving as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization
- Assisting the Executive Director and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
Fundraising
- Fully engaging in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for AHDI Promise to advance its mission
- Considering AHDI a philanthropic priority and making an annual gift reflecting that priority, commensurate with personal capacity
Board terms/participation
AHDI’s Board Members serve a two-year term and are eligible for re-appointment for additional 2-year periods. Board meetings are held every three Month (Sunday evenings) and can be attended remotely via teleconference/Zoom. We welcome candidates from any geographical location.
Qualifications
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about AHDI’s mission and who has a desire to contribute their skills and expertise as a member of a highly engaged Board.
Ideal candidates will have professional experience with one or more of the following competencies:
- Fundraising
- Public Relations/Marketing (w/Education sector expertise a plus)
- Financial expertise
A direct connection to MS and/or prior Board experience is desirable but not required.
Candidates should possess personal qualities of integrity and credibility, have a natural affinity for collaboration, and a passion for improving the lives of those affected by MS.
Service on AHDI’s Board of Directors is a volunteer position without remuneration.

Description
AHDI-promise currently sponsoring the tuition for our second group of students to attend two vocational programs in Hargeisa, Somaliland. By learning important and necessary skills, these young men and women (ages 15-21) will graduate with the ability to earn income for themselves and their families. AHDI-promise is committed to continue to gather educational resources from institutional and individual donors in U.S and distribute them to needy institutions in East Africa. our efforts on strengthening schools as we realize that this is a great way to ensure that kids receive a better education.
