Mission Statement

The mission of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program is to improve the lives and opportunities of any adult who is a non-English speaker and her/his family by offering affordable English language instruction in a safe environment and providing childcare services to enable parents, especially mothers, to attend. Secondarily, the ESL program offers information and programs designed to help these non-native English speakers to assimilate to their new home and culture.

Description

The English as a Second Language Program, hosted by the Lutheran Church of Our Savior (LCOS) in Rehoboth Beach, began almost 20 years ago as part of the Social Outreach Ministry of the church.

In addition to itsstated mission, the ESL program offers information about other programs designed to help non-native English speakers assimilate to their new home and culture.

While operating under the non-profit umbrella of the LCOS, the program is governed through a Community Advisory Board and supported by a volunteer teaching corps. We serve approximately 125 students per year from all over the world, especially students with Spanish as their first language. Students age in range from 18-65 years. Our students are Sussex County residents and many work within the community.

Instruction is offered from Basic to Level 4 ability levels. The LCOS provides space, which allows us to include a robust Children's Program with an educational curriculum as well as childcare services. Nutrious mealls provided by grant monies are provided to enrolled children.
