The FUMC (First United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids) is looking for caring adults who would like to spend approximately 90 minutes per week working on reading and literacy with kindergarten, 1st, and/or 2nd graders who attend Martin Luther King Leadership Academy (a Grand Rapids Public School). Tutoring takes place during the school day at the school and runs from October through mid-May.

  • No experience is necessary in education to volunteer.
  • All volunteers must pass a background check.
  • All volunteers must attend two one-hour training sessions.
  • All materials are provided.

Our tutoring program at MLK is a beacon of hope for the children we serve. Volunteers, like you, who commit to a weekly session, play a crucial role in shaping these young minds. This is FUMC'S 36th year of partnership with the Martin Luther King Leadership Academy!

FUMC/MLK TUTORING CENTER Our goal is to help MLK K-2nd students, via their tutor time, learn to love reading and learning! The First United Methodist Church and Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy are in our 33rd year of partnership!

Description

The FUMC Tutoring Center is located in Martin Luther King Leadership Academy. MLK is a Grand Rapids Public School. MLK serves neighborhood students; nearly 100% of these children live at or below the poverty level. This is FUMC and MLK's 33rd year of partnership! Our literacy tutoring program provides reading tutors for all Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd-grade students. Volunteers join our program from local churches, schools, and businesses and hear about us from family and friends. Our program provides training to orient volunteers to school policies, reading strategies, and tutoring center supplies. No experience is required to become part of our program, but all volunteers must pass a background check. Tutoring takes place during the school day.
