Community Reading Buddies is looking for middle-school, high-school, and college volunteers train middle and high school students to provide 1-on-1 support for K-5th grade students from the Bay Area in California. You'll work with one elementary student and help them with their reading for 45-minutes, two times a week. Most of our reading sessions are virtual via Zoom, which means all you need is a computer and internet access. However, we do run several in-person sessions at local Oakland elementary schools, as well, if you're looking for a more personal connection.

What you’ll do as a Youth Mentor:
● Twice a week, join 25 other mentors virtually or in-person for 1.25 hours.

● For the first 15 minutes of the session, you'll work with CRB staff on skills to help your elementary student buddy with their reading as well as activities that will build your own confidence, communication, and leadership skills.
● Then, you’ll break out for 45 minutes of reading activities with your buddy, including a 20-minute guided reading lesson as well as actual book time featuring some of your favorite past books like "Fly Guy" and "Elephant and Piggie."
● Remember you’re a mentor who’s there to support them in their reading lessons but to
also have fun with your buddy!

Requirements:
● Must be a 7th-12th grade student or a college student
● Must reside in the US
● Commitment to the 9-week program (3 approved absences maximum)
● Access to the internet and a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone

Benefits:
● Gain a minimum of 15 volunteer hours in the program

● Flexible, after-school schedule
● All training and materials provided
● Skill building in leadership, confidence, and communication through our Positive Youth
Development Approach
● Ability to qualify for the PVSA by volunteering with a certifying organization
● Experience for your resume and college application as well as professional references
for future employment
