Why Early Childhood Development and education?

Over 200 million children worldwide under 5 years fail to reach their developmental potential due to poverty, poor health & nutrition, & deficient care & stimulation. (Grantham-McGregor, 2007). These children are less likely to succeed in school, resulting in lower earning potential & greater risk of poverty, poor health & early parenthood. This lost potential is associated with a 20% deficit in adult income with implications for national development. (Grantham-McGregor, 2007) Children who receive quality Early Childhood development and Education (ECDE) perform better in school, are healthier & have greater employment prospects. (Lancet Series 2007; 2011) Investments in the pre-school years offer greater rates of return than investments at any other stage.

Our Project

The project intends to establish low-cost Child-Friendly Early Childhood Development and Education centres to engage children in play-based learning. The project will design safe and sustainable Child -Friendly Early Childhood Development and Education centres, play and learning materials with low-cost that engage children in play-based learning to enable the children participate in early learning activities that develop their cognitive, emotional, linguistic, intellectual, social, numerical capabilities and creative skills needed for human development and lifelong learning. The Project will integrate learning through play into the lives of the very poor, marginalized and hard -to-reach young children in crisis in Zambia. The Project will provide children with a series of developmentally appropriate games and learning materials and activities age specific to enhance the social, language, motor and thinking skills of young children. The Project will work with caregivers/teachers in the provision of a series of interactive learning games and activities with attention to the basic building blocks of early numeracy and literacy for children prior to school. Our learning and proposed implementation design will be inherently flexible and be readily adapted in response to the needs and circumstances of the selected communities. The Project will support activities that will promote understating and communication to help children develop both their understanding of words, gestures, directions and routines. The project strategy includes promoting activities that support and guide children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development and working with community members to identify poor and marginalized children eligible to be enrolled in Early Childhood Development and Education centres and promoting inclusive learning to enable the children get ready for school. The project will encourage children to explore through songs and poems, make up stories, and read together, build sight vocabulary, explore sound symbol relationships, and draw and talk about ideas. The project will construct toilets to improve sanitation facilities for the children in Early Childhood Development and Education centres (ECDE).The Project will build the capacity of caregivers in promoting play-based centered learning approaches and opportunities for young children focusing on children’s cognitive development, such as literacy and numeracy skills, and social and physical development to prepare children for school. We will train caregivers on selection and utilization of age appropriate activities that promote optimal learning and potential of young children. The project will equip parents with positive parenting skills and how to provide a safe, nourishing, and stimulating home environment for their children. The project will empower parents/families and caregivers how to create a safe, secure, stimulating and enabling environment, which promotes the cognitive, emotional and social development of the children. The project will promote child feeding and health for the children for the children at the ECDE centers in order to improve health and contribute towards successful academic achievement for children. The project will raise awareness on the importance of early childhood development and education and health. The project will raise awareness among community members on why ECDE is key to a full and productiveness of a child and to the progression of the nation and why ECDE is critical stage of development that forms the foundation for children’s future well -being and learning and the importance of inclusive education. The project will raise awareness on basic health and hygiene among communities resulting in many common diseases e.g. malaria, diarrhea, influenza etc. We will raise awareness on why a child who does not receive good health support is at risk of stunted cognitive, as well as physical development. The project will subject the children to regular medical check-ups with parental consent to identify health related issues that affect the children in the target communities. The project will provide food supplements and stimulation to stunted children, promote growth monitoring (fortified porridge). The project will conduct screening and assessment to ensure early detection of children with developmental delays and disabilities and provide assistive devices especially mobility, visual and hearing aids. The project will train caregivers and teacher on how to make teaching/learning materials using the local environment.
