ORGANIZATION: FRIENDS OF UTAH COUNTY CHILDRENS JUSTICE CENTER

  • 27 people are interested

Hello! We are looking for volunteers to join our Onsite Victim Support program at our North County Children's Justice Center.

The North Utah County Children' s Justice Center (CJC) relies on onsite community support volunteers to provide logistical and emotional support to children/teens who come to the CJC for either an interview or medical exam. While at the CJC, these trained volunteers help to keep children/teens safe and comfortable by doing simple activities such as playing games or reading, while tending to the basic needs of the child/teen and family while they are onsite.

Having a volunteer onsite is comforting to the parents of the child/teen and helps them to know that their child/teen will not be alone while they talk with the CJC Coordinator, law enforcement, DCFS worker, or medical provider.

All volunteers must submit to:
- A criminal background check
- Division of Child and Family services background check
- National Sex Offender Registry search

Mission Statement

The Children's Justice Center (CJC) is a homelike facility which serves children and families who are experiencing the crisis and chaos that comes with the disclosure of significant physical or sexual abuse of a child. The Center is designed to help children feel safe and comfortable so that they may begin to deal with the difficult and often frightening issues that surround abuse. The focus and function of the Children's Justice Center is to reduce the trauma of the child abuse investigation and help the child feel safe to reveal the truth.

Description

The Utah County Children’s Justice Centers provides or coordinates a variety of programs and services for both the victims and their families. The Children’s Justice Center both provides and makes referrals for individual therapy as well as treatment groups. Treatment groups include child & parent groups as well as teen & parent groups. The topics that the groups cover include assertiveness, coping skills, self-esteem, healthy relationships, and more. The CJC also provides forensic medical exams conducted by Nurse Practitioners. These exams are conducted for the purpose of assessing and treating trauma, treating possible exposure to infection, and making referrals for additional care. The victim assistance programs is also a core tenet of services that the CJC provides. Through the victim assistance mentor program, victims are paired with an adult mentor who meets one-on-one with the child on a weekly basis for six months. Mentors provide support to children as well as help the child increase self-esteem through positive interactions. The CJC also offers community outreach to the public and provides presentations on a variety of topics. Finally, the Children’s Justice Center also provides children and their families with various support services. Support services include monitoring of cases through the criminal justice system, education for parents, crisis intervention, and regular communication with families following the initial visit to the CJC.
