Help deliver food boxes!

Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver pre-packed boxes of sandwiches and prepared meals to homelessness support sites in Tacoma.

Drivers can select the trips they want to cover and track both hours and milage using a web-based program called RideScheduler.

Most of our food delivery needs are on Saturday mornings (10:30 am) , however we do occasionally need substitute drivers to cover weekday morning deliveries. Weekday deliveries are at 10:15 am. Most delivery runs take about an hour.

Food Delivery Sites

The Stability Site (1421 Puyallup Ave., Tacoma)-The Stability Site is a city owned emergency shelter site supporting 62 residents. It is run by the Catholic Community Services Homeless Adult Services program and is staffed 24/7. They offer showers, laundry, a camp kitchen, private living quarter and services like case management and coordinated entry.

The Family Housing Network Day Center (5050 S. Tacoma Way, Tacoma)- The Family Housing Network Day Center is a drop-in style day center for families actively experiencing homelessness. It has bath/shower facilities, free-laundry facilities, a kitchen, prepared meals, a small computer lab and offers support services like case management and coordinated entry.

How it works:

Drivers pick up food boxes from the Nativity House Shelter Kitchen and deliver them to two sites in Tacoma that support unhoused adults and families within city limits.

Lifting is minimal (20-30 lb. food boxes) and Catholic Community Services staff members can help load and unload at each stop. Each site is 10-15 minutes apart.

Volunteers drivers use their own private vehicles to tranport food boxes. Mileage is reimbursed at $0.51/mile (roundtrip). Drivers must have their own private auto insurance but additional insurance coverage is provided on top of the volunteers own insurance.

Helpful to know:

Volunteers do not need to have a big vehicle to help. Everything can generally fit in a small to midsize sedan.

Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be at least 21 years old to drive for us (minimum age required by our insurance policy)
  • Volunteers must have a valid drivers license and proof of auto insurance coverage
  • Drivers must have their own vehicle
  • Volunteers must pass a background check (processed at no cost to volunteers)
  • Volunteers must attend an oriention upon completion of the registration process

Covid-19: Masks are not required but are provided for those who want them. We will not ask your vaccination status. We just require that volunteers sign a Covid-19 liability waiver in order to participate.
