About CASA in the Heart of Texas: CASA in the Heart of Texas is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization affiliated with the National and Texas CASA Associations. We are dedicated to advocating for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse or neglect across Brown, Comanche, and Mills counties. Our mission is to ensure that every child can thrive in a safe and permanent home environment.
Position Overview: As a Volunteer CASA Advocate, you will serve as a voice for children navigating the foster care system due to abuse or neglect. CASA volunteers are appointed by juvenile court judges to represent the child's best interests in court proceedings and other settings. Your role is crucial in gathering information about the child's circumstances, making recommendations to the court, and ensuring that the child's needs are met.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct thorough interviews with the child, family members, caregivers, and other relevant parties to gather information.
* Review records and reports related to the child's case.
* Advocate for the child's needs and interests in court hearings and meetings.
* Monitor the child's situation throughout the court process and beyond, ensuring that court orders are followed, and necessary services are provided.
* Submit written reports to the court detailing findings and recommendations based on your observations and assessments.
* Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions and activities related to the case.


Qualifications:
* Must be at least 21 years old.
* Pass background checks, including criminal history and child abuse registry.
* Complete CASA in the Heart of Texas training program (provided).
* Possess strong communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills.
* Commitment to the welfare and best interests of children.
Time Commitment: Volunteer CASA Advocates typically commit to an average of 10-15 hours per month, including court hearings, case meetings, and report writing. Flexibility and willingness to attend occasional evening or weekend events may be required.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a national volunteer movement founded in 1977. CASA in the Heart of Texas is a member of the National and Texas CASA Associations. There are more than 1,000 CASA programs nationwide and 72 CASA programs in the state of Texas. CASA volunteer Advocates are individuals from all walks of life who speak up for a child’s best interests in court. You are not a foster parent, you are helping to ensure that the child’s voice is heard, making a real difference at a critical turning point in the child’s life.

  • Training is 30 hours plus 3 hours of court observation. Volunteers are asked to commit for 15 hours a month
  • Be 21 years of age or older. Have a concern for children and a genuine desire to help. Have sound oral and written communication skills. Have good human relations skills, willingness to be objective and sensitive to cultural/ethnic differences.
